All right JFK, the battle lines are drawn. W has thrown down the gauntlet. W's battle cry: It's terrorism stupid. What are you going to do?

Last night, as Miller and Cheney made a double-barreled attack on Kerry, it became obvious that the GOP is locking in on a theme: It's terrorism stupid.

You know I love history, and today's L.A. Times put Miller's speech into its proper historical perspective:

"Miller's martial, confrontational speech might have been the angriest at a national convention since Patrick J. Buchanan's "culture war" address to the GOP in 1992. But in substance, Miller's speech seemed more directly a descendant of a memorable convention address 20 years ago from another former Democrat. In 1984, Jeanne Kirkpatrick, President Reagan's U.N. ambassador, electrified the GOP convention when she said that her former party wanted to 'blame America first.'"

The Times article reports that "[s]enior Kerry advisors said they believed the attacks Wednesday were so heated that they would backfire with swing voters. But the intensity of the GOP assault this week could increase the pressure on Kerry from Democrats who believe his campaign has not been nearly aggressive enough in criticizing Bush and presenting a case for change."

I agree with the foregoing and add that although Kerry has been criticizing Bush, where is the focus? Where'a the beef? Where are the bumper sticker one-liners to associate with Kerry to describe and convey our message, our quest, to counter the one-word bumper stickers I see coming saying "Bush yes; Spitballs no."

Senator Kerry, many of us feel that when we dated Dean but married Kerry, we should have eloped with Edwards, and said to hell with not inviting the Sen. Kennedy's of our Party to the wedding who want it their way or the highway.

We are not looking to make a statement this year as we did when we nominated Sen. McGovern in 1972. We are looking to win; we need to win; America needs us to win; the world needs us to win; and maybe someone up above wants us to win.

But Sir, we need you to step up to the plate and quit taking us one step forward and two steps back. As we said yesterday, your inability or refusal to address and correct prior problems you brought upon yourself have trapped you in a kind of rhetorical molasses.

And when you do say something, after having had time to consider and consult with others about what you will say, please no more "Yes" I would have done just what Bush did, nuances to follow in due time.

Again, as we said yesterday, you are always trimming weeds that need to be yanked out by the roots and giving answers that require you to talk about nuances that we guys on the street don't always understand nor care to understand.

Sir, we have been supporting you. We are going to continue supporting you. But as you know, the Lord helps those who help themselves. Please Sir, help us help you.

Zell is an angry man. I can't imagine that his speech will play well to swing voters. But, you're right. Now's the time for Kerry to get his sh*t together.
