If the devil is in the details, should we expect the same in the fine print? -- Not in this case. Great news: A sugar free doughnut may be coming.

The product: Since 1937, Krispy Kreme's been using the same recipe to make its simple glazed doughnuts (besides the glazed classic, there are 28 other varieties bearing sprinkles, nuts, fillings and icing).

Recent history: After a meteoric rise in the late 1990's thanks to fast expansion, Krispy Kreme has been struggling lately as carb-conscious consumers, many on the popular Atkins diet, cut back on sugary sweets. The company swung to a loss in its latest quarter.

The great news in the small print: In its fiscal third-quarter earnings statement, the company reports that a sugar-free doughnut is currently in development, aimed at stemming the losses.
