The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about Oxford and Corzine
Facts and Opinions.
Fact: N.J. Sen. Jon Corzine promised to give Oxford national Democratic bucks if he can eliminate Majette in the primary.
Question: Was Majette crazy to leave her safe Congressional seat and run for the U.S. Senate?
Answer (Opinion) : Yes.
Question: Should Majette have taken Oxford up on his recent offer to agree not to outspend her if she would debate him about homeland security issues in Savannah, about health care in Augusta, and about jobs and trade in Valdosta?
Answer (Opinion): Majette should have agreed to debate Oxford on any topic he chose (I'll pass on possibilities, but use your own imagination here) in any location he chose, including India, Americus and at Route 3, Swamp Road in Waycross, Georgia.
Fact: If Majette wins the Democratic runoff, she might as well spend the rest of the election season in Antarctica. She can't win in November. (Back to opinion in this parenthesis. The only scenario where Majatte even had a prayer of winning in November was if Cain made the runoff with Isakson, then Cain could have won in the runoff against Isakson. In such a case, could Majette have beaten Cain? Maybe.)
Fact: If Oxford wins the Democratic runoff, he might as well spend the rest of the election season taking counseling for spousal abuse and not telling the truth. He can't win in November. The Senate race is over. Barring a major catastrophe or scandal -- most unlikely with Isakson -- we can start calling Congressman Isakson Senator.
Question: Since Oxford was told by Sen. Corzine that he would get national bucks if he eliminates Majette, will Corzine come through?
Answer (Fact): On June 17 Oxford was asked if he revealed to President Carter and Sen. Jon Corzine all his personal baggage when they approached him about running for the U.S. Senate? Oxford replied that he had. We now have learned that he did not. On June 26 Oxford stated: “Just last week I wrote a check for one million dollars to the Democratic Party to help defeat George Bush." President Carter never endorsed Oxford. But Oxford did not quit misrepresenting this until he was told to cease and desist and also President Carter's son Chip Carter announced that he was supporting Majette.
Answer (Opinion): Since Oxford did not disclose his baggage to Sen. Corzine -- all other things being equal -- I would guess that Sen. Corzine would not put national bucks into the campaign of a candidate with such questionable character issues. But all else is not equal. I do not doubt Oxford's statement about having given one million dollars to the Democratic Party. Assuming he did -- and the man does have a well-publicized deep pocket; just ask him -- he gave it after his personal baggage was known in Georgia and thus I would assume was known in Washington. Given this, all things are not equal, and I don't see how in fairness the national Democratic Party -- having accepted one million bucks from the guy -- could help but spend some money on his election (at least up to the million that Oxford claims to have given; no, no, I am not going there on any speculation of a quid pro quod). Regardless, I am not going to like it if the national Party gives this man any money any more than I am going to like it if Georgia Democrats elect someone next week with such questionable character issues.
Solution: We don't need to worry about any of this if we do our part to make sure Majette wins on August 10.
