Oxford picks up an endorsement -- You can even fool some of the people . . . (and isn't Albany near Plains?)
The 8-7-04 Albany Herald endorsement of Oxford over Majette reminds us that President Lincoln's observation is indeed ageless:
"If you once forfeit the confidence of your fellow citizens, you can never regain their respect and esteem. It is true that you may fool all of the people some of the time; you can even fool some of the people all of the time; but you can’t fool all of the people all of the time."
This South Georgia newspaper endorses Oxford by saying "[w]hile the South Georgia native doesn't have all the answers to all problems Congress is facing . . . Ms. Majette, his opponent in the runoff on Tuesday, is strikingly unimpressive."
This endorsement, by my count, is one newspaper, and 4 people, one being Tyrone Brooks and two being candidates.
(And yes Plains is very close to Albany. It is very possible that the Herald's editor Kay Read did not know about the Carter "switch" that was reported by Ben Smith in the ajc this week. If she did not, and had she learned about it during the debate on August 6, perhaps she would not have made this endorsement, notwithstanding Majette's poor showing. She knows the Carters very well, and she would appreciate that there is a message in the "switch.")
