Sen. Tommie Williams elected as GOP new majority leader.

Republicans in the Georgia Senate elected Sen. Tommie Williams of Lyons to be their new majority leader Friday during the state GOP convention.

Williams had no opposition and won unanimous approval by the chamber's GOP caucus for the No. 2 Senate leadership position.

Williams takes over the Senate leadership post from Sen. Bill Stephens, R-Canton, who stepped down to run for secretary of state next year.

I hear that a few small groups in the Senate GOP Caucus tried to find an opponent to Sen. Williams, but were unsuccessful. This is not surprising. Sen. Williams is tight, real tight, with Gov. Perdue, having been on his gubernatorial campaign team from day one.

Sen. Williams was considering a run for lieutenant governor until Ralph Reed jumped into the fray.

Sen. Williams was my state senator from 1988 until this year when our senatorial district was changed in redistricting.
