A wolf in sheep's clothing, Part IV. - Best comment on Perdue's proposed legislation goes to Smyrna's Sen. Doug Stoner - "Trust but verify."
As we have all read by now, Gov. Perdue’s initiative to amend Georgia’s Constitution to allow religious organizations to receive taxpayer dollars failed its first test by three votes in the state Senate Thursday.
The bill likely will return to the floor for a vote to reconsider Monday.
As was noted in my 2-9-05 post, Sen. Doug Stoner (D-Smyrna), along with Sen. Tim Golden (D-Valdosta), offered a Democratic bill which specifically prohibits state funds being used private school vouchers.
The best comment on the governor's defeated (for now) legislation goes to Sen. Stoner who noted:
"If they're serious that this isn't about vouchers, then let's put that in writing. It's like what Ronald Reagan said about the Soviet Union: 'Trust but verify.'"
