Please baby, say it ain't so. - Rep. Richardson gets 18 Democratic votes for Speaker of the state House.
This morning Rep. Glenn Richardson, of Dallas, was elected Speaker of the House. The official vote was 117-60 in the 180-member House. But there are only 99 Republicans.
Today's PI noted:
Something more to chew on: Watch how many Democrats vote for the first Republican speaker
The first item on the to-do list of the New Republican Order today is the election of state Rep. Glenn Richardson of Dallas as speaker of the House.
Democrats will put up DuBose Porter of Dublin. The result isn't in question. But watch the margin.
Republicans hold 99 seats in the 180-member House. But over a bit of buffalo steak this weekend, Richardson told us he anticipates 108 votes.
Those extra dozen endorsements would indicate the number of rural House Democrats who haven't ruled out switching parties and joining the new regime.
_______________
As noted by the Chatham County Democratic Web site www.ChathamDems.com, this means that "Richardson was supported by eighteen Democratic members of the House -- a disturbing statistic amid continuing rumors of additional party-switchers under the dome."
Thanks for the heads-up Dave Steele (who handles the Chatham Web site), but I sure wish you had been the bearer of more encouraging news.
As Dave concluded in his post, "Stay tuned!"

I can't read the minds of the rural caucus members, but hopefully this is just a warning to the urban Dems that says, "Don't you dare forget about us when you're picking up the party's pieces."
