Let's hear it for the Other Georgia. - Liberty County lands Target Distribution Center.
Congratulations to the Liberty County Development Authority for landing a 1.5 million-square foot Target Corp. regional distribution center on I-95 near Midway in Liberty County (home of Fort Stewart) about 30 minutes south of Savannah.
The center will hire about 500 people shortly before it opens in 2007, plus another 200 to 300 in future years as the facility expands.
A similar facility in Tifton has 800 employees today.
(ajc, 01-20-05.)
_______________
In 2002 Dublin got landed a Fred's distribution center on I-16, and in 2000 Dublin also got a Best Buy distribution center.
Other major retailers with distribution centers south of the gnat line include The Bombay Company, California Cartage/Kmart, Dollar General, Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, The Home Depot, Hugo Boss, Lowes, Michael's, Pier 1 Imports and two Wal-Mart distribution centers (one in Savannah, one in Statesboro and one in Douglas).
Douglas made history in 1987 landing its Wal-Mart distribution center, then and even now unheard of for such a major retailer to locate a distribution center in a community with no interstate (our competition primarily was Lake City, Florida, which is at the intersection of two interstates, I-75 and I-20).
Never listen to the politicians who say when it comes to jobs, its not all about transportation, transportation, transportation.
