The carnage continues. - Another House Democrat leaves the party, but not to the GOP. Rep. Dodson will be an independent. He says party too liberal??
The hard copy of the 01-12-05 ajc reports the following on page B4:
Democrat now an independent
The Democratic Party has lost another House member.
State Rep. Ron Dodson of Clayton County said Tuesday he's now an independent.
Dodson, who describes himself as a political moderate, said he felt the Democrats are too liberal and the Republicans are too conservative.
Dodson said there are 15 to 20 lawmakers who feel the same way. "We feel like we've been pushed off to the side," he said.
Dodson's defection means there are now 80 Democrats in the House and 99 Republicans.
Dodson is the only independent.
At the start of last year's session, Democrats controlled the chamber with 108 members.
_______________
I can't figure this "too liberal" stuff, at least as it pertains to Rep. Dodson.
Do you remember this summer when it was announced that Brother Herman Cain, Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate, had obtained the endorsement of longtime Atlanta civil rights leader Joe Beasley.
In response to this, and what was perceived as a message from Democrat Denise Majette that Beasley's move was not a sign of a mass exodus by black voters to the Republican primary, this Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate produced her own list of endorsements. They were all state House Democrats.
Unlike Cain's list of one, Majette's list had 20 endorsements; many, though not all, were black.
One that was not black was Rep. Ron Dodson of Lake City.
Part of the title to this post is "He says party is too liberal??"
The question marks are because of his endorsement of Majette. Various scorecards kept by Washington groups ranked her as the second most liberal member of Georgia's congressional delegation.
I don't know which Democrats Rep. Dodson could have possibly been talking about who were more liberal that Majette.
