Hey Sid: Would you mind not writing anymore about your friends & confidants in the Ga. House & Senate, at least for the time being.

A 10-09-04 post has the following paragraph:

"One of my good friends and confidants in Douglas is Chuck Sims. Our family ties go back to the Middle Ages. Chuck also is our Representative in the Georgia House, and has been for eight years. He just won in an overwhelming vote of confidence, garnering 65% of the vote against a well–financed and former member of the Georgia Senate."

Today's PI notes:

"There were 96 [jubilant Republicans in the House chamber at the state Capitol on Monday] when the caucus meeting began, with the express purpose of naming the first Republican speaker of the Georgia House since Teddy Roosevelt was in short pants.

"By the middle of the meeting, there were 97, when Chuck Sims of Douglas shed his Democratic clothes and baptized himself in the GOP river. By the end, just before lunch, there were 98. Hinson Mosley of Jesup, who escaped defeat by just 220 votes last Tuesday, telephoned in his party-switch to Democratic colleagues before lunch."
_______________

Chuck wrote my middle daughter Brooke wonderful letters about serving one's country during Desert Storm while he was on active duty and she was in middle school. She still has and treasures these letters.

Chuck and I attend the same church. I have always represented his extended family and his and his father's funeral home business, and continued to do so even after Chuck married his lovely wife Becky, also an attorney.

Chuck is a Citadel graduate, and he attended my daughter Brooke's wedding August a year ago in Charleston, my Brooke having married a Citadel graduate and the wedding having been at the Citadel Chapel.

I have been to and helped sponsor many fund-raisers for Chuck.

Chuck is a friend.

Today -- even though I knew he had been considering it since Nov. 2 -- hurt. Am I mad at Chuck? Not in the least, but it still hurts.

Had he sought my counsel as he always does, but this time did not, I would have strongly advised against it. Why, because I am a Democrat? No, because Chuck is a Democrat, and despite sheding his Democratic clothes for his new ones, I don't think the new ones will ever be a perfect fit.

But we must admit that whatever made Chuck feel a need to switch, just like the map showing 81% of the country's counties went for Bush, shows us there is much work to be done. And denial is not work.
