McCain & Obama comments (and lack thereof) on Jesse Helms.
From The Wall Street Journal:
Both presidential candidates this year are calling for an end to what they say are politics of division and vitriol that have intensified in Washington over the past quarter-century.
In a sense, they are repudiating a style embodied as much as anybody by former Sen. Jesse Helms, who died Friday at age 86.
Republican John McCain -- torn between maintaining the loyalties of Helms devotees in his party's base and reaching out to moderates repulsed by Mr. Helms -- issued a carefully balanced statement, saying: "At this time, let us remember a life dedicated to serving this nation."
A spokesman for Sen. Barack Obama said the candidate aspiring to be the country's first African-American president wouldn't have any comment.
