Some metro police welcome law that allows seizure of illegal immigrants' cars

On one of my and Sally's visits to Coronado and San Diego we decided to visit Mexico south of San Diego, an area known as Baja California. Although the beautiful geography is the same on both the California and Mexican sides of the border, that is all that is the same.

We traveled through the tourist trap of Tijuana south on down to Ensenada to try to get a feel for the western part of Mexico. We have a pattern of later taking our kids to places we enjoyed seeing and visiting. We have not taken our kids to Baja California.

In making our plans to go to California, we learned that car rental companies would not allow their cars to be driven into Mexico. We were told that without a special permit and special insurance coverage, if you had an accident in Mexico, your car would be impounded and it would take an act of the legislature to get you back to the states.

We borrowed a car from a friend who lived in San Diego who had the necessary special permit and insurance and left our rental car at his house and headed south.

The following article from the AJC discussing impounding vehicles made me think what's good for the goose is good for the gander:

House Bill 978 was approved by the state House of representatives this week. It still must pass the senate. The measure would allow police to seize cars of illegal immigrants who are involved in accidents or violate traffic laws.

"It's really not going to change anything," said Gwinnett County Police Corporal Illana Spellman.

"If they don't have a valid license, the vehicle is going to be impounded anyway."

The usual procedure in DeKalb and Gwinnett counties is to arrest those found driving without a license rather than issue a ticket. As part of that arrest, the vehicle is often impounded because the officer can't leave it on the side of the road. In some cases, if a relative or friend has a valid driver's license, the officer allows that person to drive the car home.

Illegal immigrants cannot get a valid Georgia driver's license because they don't have the proper paperwork.
