Kings Bay gains (for a change).

If the Pentagon's recommendations stick, Camden County will soon be home to the nation's only Naval submarine training school, four to eight new attack submarines and 3,300 new military and civilian jobs.

For the first time in several years, Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay is on the winning end of a military realignment mission.

[T]he 27-year-old base — which has endured the loss of several Trident submarines and hundreds of jobs in recent years — will gain what New London, Conn., and Cape Canaveral, Fla., are losing.

[T]he BRAC report released to members of Congress by the Defense Department Friday morning recommends relocating the U.S. Navy's only submarine school — "where enlisted personnel do basic training on being submariners" — to Kings Bay, along with an unspecified number of submarines, a maintenance contingent and possibly a sub-tender, a large surface ship dedicated to submarine support.

A missile testing facility associated with the SSBN fleet, nuclear-powered submarines armed with long-range strategic missiles, will also relocate from Cape Canaveral to Kings Bay . . . .

The realignment will bring an additional 3,245 uniformed personnel to Kings Bay, 102 civilian jobs and 20 contractors . . . .
