Alabama voters could go be put in the presidential campaign spotlight beginning in 2008.

Alabama voters could go be put in the presidential campaign spotlight beginning in 2008 under a bill that moved Tuesday within one step of final passage.

The Senate Constitution and Elections Committee approved the bill to move Alabama's presidential primary in 2008 from June to the first Saturday after the New Hampshire primary, traditionally the country's first.

This is hardly what we had in mind in our 3-13-05 post entitled "Democrats mull primary schedule changes," that discussed 40-member panel the DNC had appointed to study whether to shake up the dominance that Iowa and New Hampshire wield in presidential elections.
