DeLay on the defensive. - GOP circles the wagons as media scrutiny of DeLay escalated, lengthening the shadow that has fallen over his leadership.
House Republicans circled the wagons yesterday as media scrutiny of Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas) escalated, lengthening the shadow that has fallen over his leadership in recent weeks.
Talk of DeLay’s troubles — stoked by front-page headlines in The New York Times and The Washington Post — produced ripples of speculation about his future across Capitol Hill.
DeLay did not schedule a morning press briefing, as he usually does on either Tuesdays or Wednesdays when Congress is in session.
“Some people feel that if he goes down, we all go down,” [one] lawmaker said, on the condition that his name not be used. “There is also a sense that if he doesn’t clean up his act we’ll all be in trouble.”
