The fault line of the state GOP: rural v. suburban & exurban interests.
From the 12-07-04 ajc's PI:
New Democrats? Why, they're just a bunch of farmers, getting ready to do battle with the country-club set in charge of the state Capitol
House Democratic leaders head down I-16 to Dublin today for a retreat on the farm of DuBose Porter, the new minority leader. Soon-to-be ex-Speaker Terry Coleman will be nowhere in sight. Survivors of the Republican takeover will be trying to map out a strategy for the next legislative session — Democrats's first season with no foothold of power in the state Capitol.
Don't be surprised if the issues Democrats latch onto draw attention to the fault line of the state Republican party — between rural and suburban interests. We recall an internal Democratic memo that was floating around just before the November vote, advising an attack on Gov. Sonny Perdue "for turning Georgia over to a bunch of rich Republicans from Atlanta."
